Five years after the Vermont State Police first stated that they were considering the use of body worn cameras , the police force finally deployed the technology.
The Vermont Police Tactical Unit has been using body worn cameras since 2018. But over the years, the state police stated that funding has been an obstacle to providing body worn cameras for the remaining soldiers.
However, on June 23, driven by protests against police violence across the country, the Vermont State Senate approved a series of police reforms, including an authorization that required state police to start body worn cameras by August, forcing the state to adopt action.
Across the country, many advocates of police reform have called for more widespread use of body worn cameras as a police accountability strategy. In Vermont, some of the country's most high-profile cases of police malfeasance have been articulated on the lens and shot by a body worn cameras.
